KAC NEWS & UPDATES

X-it Stage Left:
KAC’s Departure from X.com and Where to Find Us

For years, Twitter (now X) was a vital platform for artists and arts organizations. It was a space where creatives could share their work, engage in meaningful conversations, and access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. The Kingston Arts Council used it to advocate for the arts sector, amplify the voices of local artists, and connect with a broad and engaged audience.

However, due to increasing concerns surrounding the X platform and its leadership, we made the decision to join the migration to Bluesky in January, and are now officially closing X our account.

The KAC exists to uplift creativity, foster safe, engaging spaces, and support artists – values X no longer seems interested in. We cannot continue to support a platform that is actively working against the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and exploiting artists’ work.

We hope you join us on Bluesky as we reestablish our community there and that you’ll keep in touch with us via our newsletter, on our other social media accounts (listed below), or through our regular communications channels.

We’re also still active across all our other social media platforms you can catch us here:

Hosted on Canva and projected in real time in the KAC office, the DCW invites everyone to come create, share, and connect.

How to Participate:

  • Add to the Community Canvas with your own drawings with 3 different prompts:

    • Kingston in Bloom: Celebrate the beauty of Kingston's natural world! Capture the essence of our local flora, fauna, and landscapes through your art. From towering trees to sparkling waters, let your imagination run wild!

    • The Soul of Kingston: What is the spirit that defines our city? Capture the intangible qualities that make Kingston unique. Let your art reveal the soul of our community and Uncover the heart and essence of Kingston.

    • Wild Card: Unleash your creativity without limits! This is your space to explore any artistic idea. Whether it's a hidden talent, an abstract concept, or simply a doodle, let your imagination run wild. There are no rules, just pure artistic expression.

Together with Modern Fuel, five law students and a Kingstonian lawyer have compiled a comprehensive guide to Canadian copyright law, specifically as it pertains to burgeoning artists.

The guide discusses copyright protection, registration, licensing, copyright and social media, reproduction rights, and helpful legal agreements that will protect artists.

This project aims to lessen the burden of perusing through legal jargon in order to protect artwork. Instead, it concisely puts all of the information you need in one place, so artists can get back to what is truly important: creating art!

There are always plenty of arts events happening in Kingston and the surrounding area. Check out our Arts Events Calendar to view our full list of upcoming events!
